Wakhan Corridor
I took this picture walking to the Bibi Fatima hot spring last year. I was on the Tajik side of the Amu Darya river. The snow-capped mountains are Afghanistan. The Wakhan is the “panhandle” of you see on the map of Afghanistan - a geographic anomaly tacked on in the 19th Century to provide a buffer between the Russian and British Empires. I’ve been reading a lot of Great Game history recently, and the Wakhan is usually described as a mountainous no-man’s land. The historians don’t tell you that it is stunningly beautiful.
